what's up with incompatibility of VIA and SB Live?

Maybe I'm crazy, but I swear that's what's causing my problem.

Let's see if anyone has any ideas here.

    Soyo Dragon +
    Tbird 1.3G
    Geforce 2
    SB Live Value
    256M DDR

Originally my computer would lock up after 30 mins of playing mp3's. So I did a PCI latency patch, that increased the time to about an hour, but didn't fix it.

Next I found that others had problems with SB while it was in slot 1-3, so I put it in slot 5.
Now it seems to lock up randomly, but it's never sooner than 2 hours.

The computer is completely stable if I don't use sound continuously. I'm at a loss now :?: ...

    I'll throw in for some :D :D

I've got a P4X266 chipset with a SB Live! in slot 3, and have never had a problem. The V-Link bus protocol in later VIA chipsets has certainly helped correct any errors that happened with the 686B South Bridge.

What order did you install your adaptor cards? Did you install the 4-in-1 driver before you put the SB Live! in? This must be done otherwise you can have serious issues :geek:

Man at one time I thought SB Live was the board to buy, but I have heard of so many people having problems it just scared me off completely. There are some good boards on the market that just don't have the number of problems that one has.

4 in 1 driver huh? Not familiar with that one :D

I have my GF2 in the AGP slot
        Kingston NIC in slot 4
        SB Live in slot 5

are there any chipset upgrades I have to perform?

The 4-in-1 Driver from VIA is absolutely essential for reliable and trouble-free operation of your VIA chipset based motherboard. Here's the order you should install your operating system:

          1) Remove ALL adapter cards except the video card
          2) Install the Operating System the usual way
          3) Install the VIA 4-in-1 Driver
          4) Install the video card driver
          5) Install the sound card, then the driver
          6) Install DirectX 8.1
          7) Install all other adapter cards, one at a time

          Hope this helps :)

I answered a portion of this in another thread where you referred to this problem, but here it is...

This problem has been fixed for about the past three revisions or so of the VIA 4-in-1 driver sets. What happens is that the SoundBlaster card interferes with large transfers from the hard drive. Bunch of tech stuff, but basically they have a huge fight and your system takes a crap on you.

To properly install the drivers, you should follow the instructions that Albinus gave before. I normally install all components right off and then install the srivers, but the order listed above is critical. The 4-in-1 drivers MUST be the first thing to be installed after the OS. Then video drivers, sound card drivers, DirectX and then anything else left over.

And make sure that you download the latest drivers from a location such as VIA Hardware because the ones included with the motherboard CD may be out of date ;)

If ya put the latest 4in1's on a lot of that patch will be included and that's why. But in most cases the patch has very little effect as seen here in this article on it that I posted in the Web News. ;)
