Nvidia readies Crush support for 940, 939 Athlon 64s

GRAPHICS FIRM Nvidia – in its chipset incarnation – is just about ready to push its products for the Opteron and Athlon 64 out of the door.
Let's hope for AMD's sake it's equally ready.

According to an Nvidia mole that talked to the INQUIRER in a central London haunt last Friday, Nvidia's CK8 Pro and its CK8 are now ready to roll.

The Crush K8 chip will support the Athlon 64 940, 939, and 754 pin designs – a configuration exclusively revealed here 10 days back.

It also will have support for the Nvidia two processor Opteron ready in time for Computex (September), while its CK8 and later its CK8S will support the AMD 128-bit Athlon 64 platform. That latter chipset, as we revealed here earlier, will sample in September.

The two CPU Opteron Nforce 3 Pro is a reference board which will support eight DIMMs, have Gigabit Ethernet, and support Serial ATA. It will be supported by the CK8 Pro and the CK8S Pro. The Nforce 3 Pro 150 chip for Opterons includes AGP8X, 10/100 LAN, NV RAID, sound, and USB 2.0.

The Nforce 3 Pro 250 chip is the one which gives support for four Serial ATA and two ATA-133 channels, USB 2.0, PCI and AC97. Like its friends Via and SIS, Nvidia is likely to sample PCI-Express chipsets in the fourth quarter of this year, while it will, next year, sample a spanking new DX9 graphics core for its AMD Crush K8 family.

Again, as we've written earlier, the Krush K8S, will add Gigabit Ethernet and four Serial ATA ports to AMD designs, include support for NV Raid in both Parallel ATA and Serial ATA.

The K8S won't go into mass production until December.

Nvidia is very excited about PCI Express, and that's why its Crush 3GIO will sample at the end of this year, along with the Crush K8-04 cipset that will include PCI-Express and high end DX9 graphics in yet another integrated Krush chipset.

According to the mole, the Crush 3GIO chip will have 20 PCI Express ports, an HT bridge, and support PCI Express peripheral ports.

Anti: Yes that is correct, all I know is that SoundStorm will be offered as an "add on" chip at a later date (unknown at this time).

Nvidia to bring firewall capabilities in its next chipsets
        Another hardware security project?

Nvidia will add firewall capabilities into its Athlon 64-supporting chipsets due next year. The move’s key aim is to provide more security for enterprises adopting 64-bit technology from Advanced Micro Devices.

Sources close to Nvidia's partners said firewall capabilities will be present in some of the company’s core-logic products, including in code-named CK8-04 that will be mass produced in the third quarter 2004 and the CK8S2. The former is anticipated to be a single-chip logic that will boast with support for PCI Express x16 (PEG x16), PCI Express x2 as well as 10 USB 2.0 ports. The latter – CK8S2 – will be a version of nForce3 250 designed for Socket 939 processors.

It is not fully clear whether Nvidia’s firewall technology utilises both hardware and software means, or will rely fully on silicon, not software

The trend for safe computing is very popular these days. Some CPU makers, such as Transmeta or VIA Technologies, have added special encryption engines into several of their microprocessors. Leading chipmakers Intel and AMD are also likely to bring their security mechanisms with their future chips. However, these companies’ intentions are more solid compared to those of minor players of the market. Intel Prescott chips – the next-generation Pentium 4 with SSE3 technology CPUs – will sport the code-named La Grande security technology that helps to create safer computing environments for e-Business, enabling protected execution, memory and storage. AMD is projected to build support for Microsoft's Next-Generation Secure Computing Base code-named Palladium into future generations of its microprocessors, such as AMD K9.

Nvidia surely does not want to be behind the train and will add its developments in the security area. Given that one of the target markets for AMD Athlon 64 microprocessors are enterprise workstations, firewall may be an interesting option to decrease the cost of such computers as well as the cost of their ownership. Additionally, the Santa Clara, California-based fabless semiconductor company is expected to support all mainstream security technologies, such as Palladium, in its upcoming products too.

Nvidia did not comment on the story.

Nvidia Nforce 3 250 becomes March hare
          Delayed chipset arrives

The heavily delayed Nforce 3 250 motherboard chipset will be introduced on the 1st of March. This motherboard chipset was announced back in November 2003 and Nvidia's CEO mentioned it more than a few times in company conference calls.
This chip will be able to have its AGP and PCI fixed that will help in overclocking and it will bring Gbit LAN and serial ATA.

This chipset will rock 939 Athlons but will be used for 754 pins since the memory controller part is placed nicely inside of the Athlon GX/FX/ Opteron core.

Nvidia's partners might have some boards ready for CeBIT so the real availability of these boards seams to be April. AMD still has to launch socket 939.

The press that Nvidia looks after will be invited to a nice party next Monday, two chaps from the US will be able to explain why this chipset was so long delayed.

I almost forgot. The chip will have HT 1000MHz support.

NVIDIA nForce3 250 mainboards approach the market
New mainboards for Athlon 64 to come next week

Mainboard partners of NVIDIA Corporation are going to start selling their new products based on NVIDIA nForce3 250-series of core-logic products next week, sources close to NVIDIA told X-bit labs on Wednesday.

NVIDIA nForce3 250 family of core-logic products is expected to support AMD 64-bit 754-pin, 939-pin and 940-pin microprocessors and is ready to power both high-end AMD Opteron and AMD Athlon 64 FX microprocessors as well as performance-mainstream AMD Athlon 64 chips. NVIDIA nForce3 Pro 250 core-logic is highly likely to be capable of working in 2P AMD Opteron systems.

The nForce3 250 products are very likely to bring a number of advanced features over its predecessor – NVIDIA nForce3 Pro 150 – such as 2 Serial ATA-150 ports as well as external 2 Serial ATA-150 PHY support in addition to presently available AGP 8x, PCI, 2 ATA-33/66/100/133 channels with RAID 0,1 and 0+1 support, 10/100Mb/s Ethernet, USB 2.0, etc. A version of the nForce3 250 series intended for enterprise-class workstations – the nForce3 250Gb – adds Gigabit Ethernet support and promises to be the world’s first core-logic to integrate native Gigabit Ethernet inside the chip.

To provide even more value for enterprise customers, NVIDIA is expected to incorporate its firewall technology for enhanced network security into its next-generation core-logic components, including the nForce3 250-series, sources said.

Both versions of NVIDIA nForce3 250 family of core-logic sets are in production. The majority of NVIDIA’s mainboard partners are likely to demonstrate nForce3 250- and nForce3 250Gb-based mainboards at CeBIT 2004 in Hannover, Germany, next week. Along with demonstration, resellers are expected to start offering new NVIDIA-powered mainboards for AMD 64-bit microprocessors.

A number of mainboard makers, such as Chaintech, DFI and Microstar International already demonstrated their versions of NVIDIA nForce3 250 mainboards at CES and Comdex trade-shows.

Availability of NVIDIA’s new core-logic products is pretty important event for the Santa Clara, California-based company. Currently VIA Technologies commands about 90% market of chipsets for AMD64 chips, while NVIDIA’s nForce3 150-series are not deployed really widely because of the lack for some capabilities, such as Serial ATA-150. With the new series of chipsets NVIDIA is likely to begin a new round in a fight for chipset market share.

NVIDIA does not officially comment on reports about availability of next-generation products.
