  • Cod4 Crash to desktop.

I am getting random crashes in cod4 after almost 6 months of troublefree gaming. The crash happens about 6 or 7 minutes into a mp game.
I am using the 186.13 driver, and i have had no problems with any of the games that i play CSS/TF2/FC2/DeadSpace. From the very beginning I have been getting the warning when I start the game "would you like to start in safe mode, etc etc". This crash to desktop has never happened before.

Set the affinity of the executable to one core only.

I have a pair of quad core Xeons. Many games can't handle multiple cores properly. I have to set the affinity to one core only. Usually core 4, first core second Xeon.

Thanks for the reply, would it be possible for you to be a bit more specific, I am not sure how to do this. If I set to one core, are there any performance drawbacks? cause cod4 is not optimized for multiple cores right?

Also randomly yesterday I had no problems and played for 1 hour straight with no crashes.

Performance should not be affect on COD4, it runs off your video card more than CPU. I would try it and see if it helps.

In task maanger, you right click on COD4 executable and set affinity.

It could also be video card overheating. It is hard to say without seeing the error that is generated.

There is literally no error. Just crashes straight to desktop, says "IW stopped working..."
Today have had no crashes or anything. I dont think its the graphics card cause I can play Crysis for hours, and I am pretty sure Cod4 is not more demanding.

Check your event viewer. Did you try setting the affinity? Did you apply all the patches for COD4 and the latest video card drivers? COD4 did have patches in video card driver upgrades.

This is what it said in the event viewer
Faulting application iw3mp.exe, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x4859a219, faulting module pbcl.dll, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x4ad4e516, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x000332ad, process id 0xd34, application start time 0x01ca61c668861d53.
Out of all that, I see pbcl.dll which sort of leads me to think it may be punkbuster related.
If I get the crash one more time I am going to set that affinity thing.

Punkbuster was a pain in many games. I hope they drop it in the future.

How do you like the HAF 932? I was looking at it for SAS 15K.6 and 15K.7 drives. I want 3 x RAID 1 pairs + spare = 7 drives.

Love it. beautiful case. couldnt be happier with the hard drive installation trays they got. The fans dont have filters, and I have 6 fans in mine, so it gets a little dusty after 3-4 months. lots of room for graphics cards and the like.

My friend got the 922, also quite big.

I am planning on a new

                        Supermicro X8DAH+-F board
                        pair of Intel E5530 Xeons
24GB triple channel DDR1333 RAM (12GB per CPU)
pair of ATI 5850x2 graphics adapters in CrossfireX
                        7 x Seagate SAS 3.5" 15K.6 or 15K.7 hard drives
PC Power and Cooling 1200W 20A power supply.

It looked like the best chassis for those drives.

I am looking at a Sanyo HD camcorder for $349 for my trip to the Southern Caribbean and Panama Canal next month. I will probably bring back 5000+ pictures on my Olympus E-500 and E-520.
